Anything is possible

Its ironic how growing up in Maine and hoping, believing that the Red
Sox could win the World Series has influenced me as a librarian (and a
person). Rooting for the Red Sox my whole life has taught me alot about
how to be the underdog. Whenever I think that something isn't possible
for me to accomplish [...]

Tablet PCs are neat!
I went to a very neat demonstration today about Tablet PCs put on by
the Academic Computing department on my campus. I've never had a chance
to play with a Tablet PC before. I've seen them and I thought that they
looked cool, but hadn't every used one. All I can say is “wow, that [...]

Spread Firefox Newspaper Ad Campaign

Firefox is trying to put together enough cash to get a full page ad in
the New York Times. According to their website this would be the first
ad in a major newspaper for open source software. I love Firefox and
think that is a very worthy cause. Firefox has so many advantages.
Two things [...]

RSS Feed for Checked Out Items
So I got my code finished for my page that creates an RSS feed. So I am
posting my demo here for people to check out. In order for the feed to
be created for the user to load in a news aggregator, the user must
enter their Library ID and verification. Check [...]

After getting the comments for this site spammed for the last week,
I've decided to turn the comment feature off. Dealing with this is
frustrating. I keep reading that an upcoming version of Radio will
allow me to delete junk comments. I hope so because I like the feature
but HATE getting spammed! Not having comments keeps this site [...]

There is a great article over at Library Journal
which talks about the disillusionment of the next generation of
librarians. I have been in the library profession a little less than
four years and overall my experience has been very good. Although I was
downsized out of my first library position (at a website company not a
library) I was [...]

RSS of User's Checked out Items
After several hours of work this week I got an RSS feed of checked out
books for a user created. It took quite a bit of playing but it is
working quite well now. The difficult part wasn't writing an XSL to
transform the XML I received from my catalog but rather sending [...]

OPAC and RSS ideas

OPAC and RSS ideas
On my way home tonight I was thinking about possible applications of
RSS for the catalog. As I previously posted, I am working on and RSS
feed of a user's checked out items. However, I was thinking that there
must be some other applications of RSS for information in the OPAC.
About half way through my [...]

Benefits of Night Reference
Tonight I was reminded of the several benefits of a night
reference shift. Lots of uninterrupted time to do work. No emails or
phone calls because I am the only one in the building. I got lots of
little bitty tasks done. At least my electronic inbox is cleaner, even
if I have a larger pile [...]
