Skype

Skype

One of the neat aspects of working for a technology company is that we use Skype
to communicate with one another. Yesterday, I had a conference call
with the CEO and another employee who was in another part of the
country. Maybe I'm just bright-eyed about this entire experience (ask
me over a beer at ALA Midwinter), but I thought that was really cool.
If you haven't had a chance to chat via Skype, download the thing and
give it a shot. You can reach me at stevenmcohen. Can you tell that I
love my new job?

Anyway, today I learned that Skype will be experimenting with Voice-Mail Service.
So, if I'm away from my desk, and someone “calls”, they can leave me a
voice message on Skype. Suweeeeeeet!! (The second one of the day -
c'mon, it's been a while)

I
was excited to see Steven is using Skype. I just discovered Skype
myself and got an account. A good friend of mine just moved to Germany
to take a post doc and his phone situation is not good. He basically
shares a  phone with other people. Plus there is the cost of
international phone calls. Now we can talk or chat without having to
pay exorbitant phone bills and him having some privacy. I can see lots
of other possibilites for Skype as well. I wish that we had Skype when
I was doing distance group work during my masters.Chat works but is isn't as good as talking on the phone. With Skype
my classmates and I could have talked without have to pay for the
expense of the conference call. Skype would also be good for some
committee work I currently have to do but don't have a budget for
conference call.
