Back Safe and Sound

As many of you know, I moved to Houston about 2 months ago. Last week I got to experience my first hurricane evacuation. UH was great in that they gave all of their employees leave and I spend my last day before departing helping to get the library systems ready for the storm. The experience reminded me of how important disaster planning is. I’m glad that UH Libraries had a plan in place for us to follow. As for my own stuff, I made backups on my iPod to take with me.

My husband and I were very lucky and it only took us 12 hours to get to a friend of his family in San Antonio. Rather than spend all our time worrying we did some touristy stuff to occupy our minds. San Antonio is a great town and I’m really looking forward to heading back there for ALA Midwinter. After a couple days we decided to return home. When we got back we discovered that (fortunately) there really had only been minor damage in our area. No flooding or broken windows, some trees down but the power was on. Now everyone here is trying to get things back in order. Classes at UH don’t resume until Thursday but it looks like the library may be reopening sooner. I’m going to LITA Forum at the end of the week which means that the more I can get done before I leave the better.
