SFTP Clients

A friend of mine at work just moved her blog to LISHost and wants to upload materials. Since LISHost only allows SFTP or SSH connections she asked me what a good open source or free SFTP client would be. I’m a Mac user and she’s a PC user so I had to do a little research. Here are a few I came up with.

For Windows

For Mac

Another way to get files to a Linux/Unix server is secure copy (scp) you can do this from the command line on your Linux box or Mac (on the Mac its the Terminal). Check out this “how to” about secure copy for more information. There is also information here about the rsync command which you can use to sync files/directories between two servers.

Another good one is Core FTP Lite. I use it for all of my systems work on ALEPH and SFX. It works very well. We miss you in SUNY land.

If you’re comfortable with command lines, you should check the Mac again. I suspect that, since Mac OS-X is ‘just’ Unix, that if you open a terminal window and type ‘sftp’, that you’ll find that an sftp/ssh client ships withe the base OS.

I SFTP and SCP from the command line on the Mac, but for people who are less comfortable in the command line, these two GUI clients are good alternatives.

Panic’s Transmit is just a great FTP/SFTP program for the Mac. Not free and no open source, but absolutely worth your money!
