Where does the time go?

A part of me can’t believe that it is more than 1/2 way through July. I had this whole vision about the stuff I wanted to get done this summer but things don’t always go as planned. I thought I’d spend most of the summer writing and working on web redesign but that hasn’t exactly happened.

  • Our intranet migration to Drupal took longer than I thought and I’m still working on some integration issues between our homegrown CMS and Drupal. Everytime I work with Drupal I find more interesting stuff. This is both a blessing and a curse because I’m perpetually getting drawn in.
  • Planning and teaching an all day preconference on web services and mashups was a huge amount of work. I don’t regret doing it but even though I’ve taught this stuff before it changes so much in six months that its like teaching it new again. I hope the content was useful for people and I promise I’ll get some correct code samples up ASAP.
  • Server upgrades and migrations abounds are still on going. Maintenence is a necessary trial and I’m lucky that we’re ahead of the game this time with these tasks. Thank god for my meticulous staff who have been working on this. Mostly I oversee and make sure coordination and communication happens. If we finish in early August I’m bringing cookies for everyone.
  • Helping with our ERM implementation has been a time suck but its cool to manage a project that I don’t have a vested interest in for a change. I’d like to stretch my project management legs more on stuff where I’m not a stakeholder and can focus on managing the project.
  • Writing and research for the next book continues. Some stuff has come together nicely. Other things I need to pick up the pace a bit on. Need to put my nose to the grind in my free time. No weekend fun for me the rest of the summer.

Overall being gone for a month has thrown me off. I’m still trying to get reoriented and decide where I need to focus. In the short term it looks like Drupal, Drupal and yeah more Drupal. So expect more Drupal posts for sure. Likely stuff on Services and the REST Server as well as some stuff about searching files (I hope).

I am a public librarian too, learning Drupal. I think you’re “where does the time go?” is one I keep near and dear to my heart. I am beginning to love Drupal, but the learning curve has taken time. :) . I wish you the best of luck with the migration!!!!!

Drupal can be all encompassing when you’re in build mode. We have just finished building our library website and althought it was a painful process at times, we are very happy with it and I’m happy with all that I’ve learnt.

Now we are moving on to adding more functionality and bells and whistles. Have only really started scratching the surface of what we can do with Drupal and am very excited about discovering more.
