You Learn Something New Everyday
Okay so everyday since I got my new Mac I've been discovering nifty
new tricks. Today I learned something interesting about my Mac. If I'm
in Firefox and I hold one finger on the touchpad and then move another
finger right to left it activates the browser's back button. If I do
the opposite, ie [...]

Why databases-driven applications rock
It seems I've had another troubleshooting week. I didn't create
anything new last week but fixed a whole bunch of problems. One problem
I had to deal with was a bug in the 6.5 version of the ILLiad
interlibrary loan software which allows you to enter invoice
information in the client but not view it. OCLC [...]

Authority Issues

Authority Issues
Andrew Pace's article in American Libraries Online
has a great quote in it about authority control. “Authorities are
important, but I would argue only as
system-suggested searches (clicking on an author or subject link in a
hitlist or record display) after a patron query.” Although I started
out thinking that I would be a cataloger and did a cataloging
internship [...]

I had a good chuckle today reading Michael Stephens post about the “Unintended Consequences of Podcasting”.
I discovered very similar things when I put together my first podcast.
Being the perfectionist that I am, it was difficult to hear the ah, ums
on the recording. I guess that I will get over it. Another unintended
consequences is that you [...]

Podcast corrected

Oops! Sorry I just realized that the podcast feed was messed up. I put
the MP3 in the wrong folder on my server. I figured it out while
playing with my Mac which incidentially will open up and play the MP3s
in Firefox with the Quicktime Plugin. neat.  The problem is fixed
now and the first Library Web Chic [...]

Mac Escapades

Mac Escapades
Well my new Mac arrived on Friday and I've been playing with it
every since. All I can say is I love it! It has a few quirks that I am
trying to get used to. (Like the fact that Needlesearch won't work in
Firefox on the Mac and that there isn't any built-in CD copying
software) Overall [...]

David King has an interesting post entitled “Unwanted Social
Networking”. Basically, he talks about whether or not it is desirable
to be available to everyone at everytime. David recently had a complete
stranger randomly contact him via Skype. He didn't necessarily see this
as a good thing being contact by random folks while at work.
Personally, I concur. I won't [...]

Jump drive Uses

Jump drive Uses

Michael over at the Travelin Librarian just had his employer give
him a 1 GB jump drive and he doesn't know what to do with it. (He
already personally owns one.) Well, one thing I do with mine is
transport and play MP3s. Because my work frowns upon me taking up
massive amounts of server space with [...]

The Other Side of the Fence

I was reading about Meredith's recent job search disappointment at Information Wants to be Free this morning and wanted to say something about being on the other side
of the fence. I've seen four or more searches since starting at SUNY
Cortland. The ones that are the most heartbreaking (personally) are [...]
