My poor former home

If you haven’t seen the news about the flooding in the northeast, you haven’t been paying attention. One of the areas severely effected is my former home, Binghamton, NY. (CNN broadcast from Binghamton this evening.) I talked to friend there today who said that things were a mess and pointed me to the local newspaper website, CNN and photos from the locals on Flickr for the latest.
Being in New Orleans and hearing librarians speak about the damage done to their libraries by Katrina and trying to recover, brings home for me how crippling a natural disaster can be for a library. So all I can think about is the fact that the Broome County Public Library (recently built, 2000) is downtown and too close to the Susquehanna river for comfort. I have fond memories of visiting the library, borrowing stuff, and the people there who worked hard with a very limited budget to provide services to the community, even when the local government thought it best to close all the branch libraries in 2003. I hope that the library fares okay but am worried.
