News aggregators
Nov 14th, 2006 by Karen
Since Internet Librarian I’ve been playing with several different news aggregators. I’ve started to use Flock for new reading particularly since I’ve made Flock my regular browser at home because it is really good for offline blog posting. The problem with Flock for news reading is the fact that it has to reside on your computer. So I have to feed read in one location to make it work properly.
I’m not keen on this so I haven’t given up on Rojo yet. Particularly since I noticed today that I can now create RSS feeds for items I’ve tagged or flagged. This is sweet because I can then subscribe to my flagged and tagged items in Flock. I’m hoping to find a way to use this feature to import items into del.icio.us as well.
I’ve also been using Gmail, Google Calendar, and Google Docs alot of late. As a result, I’ve been considering using Google Reader. Like Rojo, Google Reader let’s you tag items, “star” them, or share them. This makes it worth checking out. I haven’t quite figured out how to make Google Reader do exactly what I would like though. In particular, I want to be able to see the items I’ve tagged and be able to view groups of tagged items, kind of like how del.icio.us works. So I’ll keep testing and playing until I’ve satisfied I understand how each of the choices work and which is best for me at this point.

BlogLines is still my choice.
You actually CAN gather items by tagging in Google Reader, exactly as you’ve described: http://www.google.com/help/reader/faq.html#tags
Gordita is supposed to incorporate del.icio.us into Google Reader (see post on the Google Reader Blog: http://googlereader.blogspot.com/2006/11/tools-to-improve-your-reader.html)
The page the Google Reader Blog references is gone, but here’ the Google cache:

Here’s hoping it is available soon- i’d like to give it a try!
