ALA Midwinter 2007 Day 1
Jan 20th, 2007 by Karen
I arrived safely in Seattle for Midwinter yesterday after a long flight from Houston. Luckily I had my Ruby on Rails books to read which kept me pretty entertained. I got into Seattle around noon and as a result, I had most of the afternoon to myself to walk around. I convinced a friend of mine to walk to Salumi to have a super late lunch. If you don’t know about Salumi, it was featured this week on Anthony Bourdain’s travel show No Reservations. They make their own fresh salami (several kinds) and mozzarella cheese. However, because of their recent spot on No Reservations they were almost completely out of stuff at 3pm. However, they did have some salami left so I had a wonderful sandwich. Salumi is a hole in the wall but their food phenomenal. Problem is they are only open Tuesday to Friday 11am - 4pm so ALA folks you’ve likely missed your chance to check them out this trip.
In the evening I got a chance to go to the Six Arms and hang out at LITA Happy Hour. The beer menu at Six Arms was quite good and several of the folks I was with got the “taster tray” to sample all of the local offerings.
For dinner I went out with a bunch of friends to Pan African Market which is a great little Ethiopianesque restaurant down by the market. The nice thing about it was each person could order individual dishes and not share (or share if they liked). This is good for folks who might like the taste of Ethopian food but might be nervous about the whole communal dining aspect. The food an company was great but I was ready to head back to the hotel early due to exhaustion from the time change.
I couldn’t ask for a better first day at ALA and I’m hoping that Saturday will be just as much fun!

mmmm, salumi! that place looked awesome on No Reservations. i’m jealous.
