On Recruiting and Being Recruited
Jul 2nd, 2007 by Karen
After making a huge effort to recruit a Web Developer for my department and having the search fail, my boss and I decided that perhaps it might be better if we recruited a librarian with technical skills for my department instead. The process of getting the line reconfigured and putting together the posting took a bit longer than I would have liked. However, my Web Services Coordinator position is now on available on the Libraries website.
I was fortunate enough to be able to recruit this job while I was at ALA. When it comes to people, I am really a face-to-face person. I prefer to recruit people in person, telling them about the job, the library, and my management style. Honestly I don’t want someone to apply for a job that they don’t really want to have or that they don’t think will be a good fit. So I try to make sure that I let people know as part of the interview process what they are getting themselves into. I also like to find people based on other folks recommendations, rather than combing through a bunch of resumes. While you can find good candidates via the traditional recruiting process, I’ve had the experience of the person not matching what is on the resume too many times to not be slightly leery.
By the same token, I like being recruited face to face. Not just because it makes life easier, ie you don’t have to look for a job, but also because it let’s me know that the organization is truly interested in me and allows me to figure out if I’m really interested in working for them. It is a fantastic experience to be recruited by an organization that you admire and think does great things.
I think UH is doing some great things in Web Services right now and I think there is a potential for us to do lots of interesting a good things in the future. So if you know someone who would be a good fit please take a look at the ad and encourage them to apply.

May I just say that I am *drooling* over that job description? Too bad I’m a year and a half from graduation. Sigh.
Interesting….either I am overpaid or the cost of living is higher in my area. It sounds like you are on the right track though, and I know you find just the right person for the job.
Back to my Finding Aid now. [Gosh they are dull.]
