Share your Mac printer with Windows without Samba

Lifehacker has a great post about how to share your Mac printer with a Window machine without using Samba. The trick is using something called Bonjour, which has a Windows client and is a snap to get working. The even better part as I’ve extolled before is that you can use an Airport Express to print wirelessly using the same technology. For me this is awesome because I can be anywhere in the house with my laptop and print, regardless of if my husband’s computer is on or not. This is a lifesaver when I need a recipe from my electronic collection and don’t want to bring my laptop anywhere near the kitchen. Print the recipe, pick it up downstairs and go to work on dinner. The other cool thing about Airports is they can also connect to storage devices like a Firewire or USB hard drive and allow you to access them from the network. At some point this is going to allow me to replace the old PC I’m using as a file server with a sleek new 500 GB Firewire drive which will take up way less room and be easy to pack in the event of hurricane evacuation.

zeroconf is a beautiful thing! many, many printers support it, fortunately for all of us.
Indeed, zeroconf is a beautiful thing. If only other stuff was this easy. I’m still discovering all the nifty zeroconf stuff out there.
