Arrived safely in Portland for code4lib
Feb 24th, 2008 by Karen
Arrived in Portland safely for code4lib and had all Sunday afternoon to myself. The plane trip in yielded nice photos of the Columbia River which we flew over. But even better the Portland natives who I was sitting with pointed out Mt St. Helens and Mt. Rainier as the plane made its decent. Unfortunately, I was on the wrong side of the plane to see Mt. Hood. I was able to see it (I think) on the TriMet ride from the airport to downtown.
Once I got checked in, my first priority was lunch and after wandering around a bit between my hotel (Washington and 5th) and the conference hotel on Pine, I had a yummy tuna melt panini at Cafe Bijou across from the hotel where code4lib will be. Next I trundled off to Powells to check out their uber selection of books. Honestly I could have spend the entire afternoon and the contents of my checking account there. But I exercised self control and only bought one book.
After a stop at the hotel for to drop off things and check my email, I set out for Washington Park, which was suggested as a good possible place to take pictures of Mt. Hood. I figured since the weather was nice there was no time like the present. Problem was I left my map of the park in the hotel which meant that I because of my poor sense of direction I didn’t actually make it to the Rose or Japanese Gardens. I had to settle instead for have a nice tromp through the woods and back to the Max station. Will make another attempt to visit the Rose and Japanese Garden on Thursday if the weather holds.
