code4lib Day 1 Afternoon talks

XForms for Metadata creation - Winona Salesky and Michael Park
Winona and Michael each demonstrated the XForms that they have developed. Although they used slightly different methods, Winona’s XForms use a Firefox extension to render properly and Michael’s use Orbeon which is server-side, the goals were similar. I really was impressed with both of these forms and want to get my hands on them. Winona’s code is available as is Michael’s code.

To organize or not to organize
Keep things as they are
- It’s not broken, why fix it?
- There are enough fomral organizations, we don’t need yet another
- The way that code4lib runs is what makes it unique and valuable
- code4lib is an experiment and that makes it valuable - Kevin Clarke
Reason to formalize
- Smoothing out the bumpy road
- Responsibility will ensure that things don’t fall through the cracks or are rushed at the last minute
- More formal organization will help
- open up more grant and sponsorship opportunities
- get travel funding
- get recognition form Promotion and Tendure and similar committees
- More formal organization does not necessarily mean a bureaucratic structure
Summary of the issues - By Michael Giarlo
- Formality and committee are loaded with negative connotations of bureaucracy
- general agreement that we wish to have continuity
- participatory spirit of code4lib has been one of its hallmarks and points of attraction
- code4lib is by nature highly decentralized and (to some extent) democratically self-managed
- code4lib is neither top-down or bottom-up It has a bazaar-like infrastructure
- however it is not flat either
- appears to be a general agreement abotu wanting to keep code4lib as decentralized as possible/reasonable
- need to encourage individuals to take on leadership positions
If we organize what are we organizing?
- code4lib journal already has a pseudo-formal structure
- code4lib as a conference
- code4lib as an organization
Options for code4lib future
- keep everything the way it is
- join with another organization
- I doubt that there would be much agreement with this, but it is a possibility
- Formally organize code4lib
- can be done a number of different ways
- either legally (tax status etc)
- tax exempt status
- legal entity
- law suits
- recognition
- different types
- Assets - can have them
- or informally
- no legal paperwork
- more flexible - don’t have to play by the rules
- easier to dissolve
Where do we go from here?
- Task force
- study the options
- write a report
- community to vote to implement or not
